“Charley Ford Forever” is a passion project from cinematographer Nate Klein and video editor Kevin Strick. For those not close to the skateboarding community, Charley Ford, aka CJ, was a skater from South Central LA that was the unfortunate victim of a homicide on October 21st, 2012. CJ was on his way to making a name for himself within the skateboarding industry, having racked up a healthy list of sponsors, a ‘Mag Minute’ spotlight on The Skateboard Mag’s website, and filming with established videographers such as Nigel Alexander. Charley had an energy, charisma, and raw talent to him that magnetized people who, in turn, wanted to be around him and see him ‘make it’ in skateboarding.
Klein was one of a handful of filmers that helped Charley get his name off the ground and connected him to a few others to help kickstart his career into skateboarding and out of South Central. In the days immediately after Charley’s death, Klein would go to the Paramount skatepark, Charley’s stomping grounds, and listen to the stories of Charley’s close friends, still in shock from the news, unsettled with the events being too fresh to be real. It was this atmosphere that Klein wanted to capture and share. During the course of any given skate session with friends, there’s always one person that has to leave the session early and that little window of time sparks the others to get that one last trick in before they go. “This is for you CJ” became the mantra and this project became the opportunity for Charley’s close friends to dedicate one last trick to him.
