Diaries Downunder | Episode 2 2015 – Snow, Surf or both? A Canterbury excursion with Blake Thornton.
Blake Thornton is a professional surfer hailing from Sydney, Australia. Blake has set out on a mission to start adventure the globe. For his latest adventure he is welcomed by the DDU crew in Christchurch, NZ and is quickly whisked up to the nearby Canterbury Club Fields – more specifically a hidden gem known as Mount Cheeseman.
Blue skies and powder are on the menu with some of the best backcountry terrain in the Southern Hemisphere coupled with the splendour of the Central South Island vistas! Blake is thrown into the mix with Nick Hyne, Nick Brown and Roland Morley-Brown as they make the most of the amazing snow conditions right now. He rips too!
The South Island of New Zealand is pretty narrow and it is completely possible to surf and snowboard in the same day. We headed with Blake to find some waves..along with waves we managed to find seals and dolphins and a wave that had Blake exclaiming “I’m definitely come back next winter..for a month!”.
