The ski trips that we have undertaken so far in the season 2016/17 can not be more different. After a few weeks before we came from the lonely village of Bakhmaro in the small Caucasus and had unforgettable treeskiing weeks behind us in the deep powder of the Georgian mountain forests, we were once again attracted to the high alpine terrain of the Western Alps. But the alpine winter had not been so far to it’s best. To find good powder, we had to search for a terrain, which was extremely high and ranged from wide northern flanks to glacier regions. Not only the invitation of Frank Henssler, the managing director of the heli-skiing company Heli-guides operating in the Italian Alps, but also an upcoming Genoa low pressure area with new snow above 1,800 meters lured us into the secluded high valley of Valgrisenche in the italian Aosta-Valley. In the upper part of this largely uninhabited and secluded valley, directly in the Italian-French border region, only an empty reservoir with an unstable dam wall testifies to human activities. All around, the mountains are so high and so wild that you only have access to the snowy and wild slopes by helicopter. In addition, the Valgrisenche is one of the few spots in the Italian Alps, where Heliskiing is still permitted in a certain period and on certain days.
In short: We had great Heliskiing-days in Aosta-Valley / Italy. Valgrisenche is a perfect spot with huge terrain and a lot of Powder fun. You fly up to 4.000 meter and even in bad winters you find Powder with the Copter. Many thanks to Frank Henssler from HeliGuides and Guidemonterosa, who has given us such an extraordinary experience.
